The Department of the Environment provides a new SMS service called "Air Aware". The service notifies subscribers when air pollution levels are currently or forecast to be high or very high.
During periods of high air pollution, the symptoms of people with respiratory conditions or heart disease may worsen. Healthy people are unlikely to experience any ill effects. The frequency of these episodes is largely dependent upon the weather. They usually occur in winter when there are cold calm conditions and there is build up of emissions from transport and burning of fuel.
The SMS service allows those individuals who could benefit most from air pollution alerts to sign up to receive an alert by text message to their mobile phone.
